| Lee and Associates Receives ASLA Awards / 2003
The Potomac Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) awarded Lee and Associates two Merit awards, recognizing superior professional accomplishments, at a banquet held recently. The award-winning projects include the garden at the Korean Embassy Residence and the butterfly garden designed for the Alban Towers apartment restoration, both located in Washington, DC. Lee and Associates’ original landscape design for the Korean Embassy Residence, located near American University in the Spring Valley neighborhood, was impacted by the Army Corps of Engineers remediation of hazardous materials buried after World War I era weapons testing. Extensive excavation and tree removal required a new master plan for the site. Designers re-interpreted the landscape, establishing a place of healing that incorporates culturally significant elements into the broader context of formal gardens and naturalistic spaces. The landscape design for the Alban Towers apartment building, a historic landmark on Wisconsin Avenue in North Georgetown, featured a butterfly garden on top of a new parking structure off the back of the tower building, incorporating historic preservation principles to sensitively blend new elements with old. "These awards represent a validation from our peers, which gives our firm both a great sense of accomplishment and honor," said Jeff Lee, ASLA, the founding principal of Lee and Associates. The Maryland and Potomac Chapters of the ASLA encompass the state of Maryland, Washington DC and Northern Virginia.
