| Lee and Associates Take Part In The Celebration of National Landscape Architecture Week / 6 APRIL 2004 Washington DC Lee and Associates, Inc. will present an educational display of plans for Kingman and Heritage Islands on Saturday morning, April 26 at the island’s welcome area behind RFK Stadium, in celebration of Landscape Architecture week. Designers will explain restoration plans to the general public and volunteers picking up trash on the islands in conjunction with the Anacostia River clean-up taking place the same day. The event is free and open to the public beginning at 8:30 am. Heritage Island is located in Kingman Lake near RFK Memorial Stadium on the Anacostia River in Washington DC. Kingman Lake was constructed when the Corps of Engineers dredged extensive existing freshwater tidal marsh habitat from the 1920’s through the 1930’s to create recreational opportunities for area residents. In 2002, the US Army Corps of Engineers developed a Preferred Master Plan concept to enhance the wildlife habitat and develop the islands as a passive recreational venue for local residents. The Heritage Island project supports broader efforts to improve the Anacostia watershed, and will restore approximately 10 acres of freshwater tidal marsh habitat. These wetlands are expected to provide habitat for resident fish, migratory fish, migratory birds, and a variety of reptile and amphibian species. National Landscape Architecture Week (April 19-27, 2003) recognizes the important role of landscape architecture in creating the special places where we live, work, and play. The week encompasses Earth Day (April 22) and the birthday of Frederick Law Olmsted (April 27), long acknowledged as the founder of the American landscape architecture profession. Public events are being planned across the nation, including student competitions, tours of local landscape architecture sites, and community improvement projects.
