| Alban Tower / Washington, DC ULI Design Excellence Award ASLA Merit Design Award The elegant Alban Towers, a Gothic Revival apartment building designed in 1929, visually complements its high profile neighbors, the Washington National Cathedral and St. Alban's School. Subsequently converted to an upscale hotel and later a Georgetown University dormitory, an award winning historic preservation project has restored the apartment building to its original use. Lee + Papa and Associates (LPA) provided comprehensive landscape architectural services as part of the restoration, from schematic design to construction documentation. A 22,000 square foot linear urban rooftop garden park was developed on top of an in-ground parking garage. To create a green buffer between the original seven story historic building and fifteen newly constructed luxury townhomes, LPA designed a Butterfly Garden as an amenity to Alban Towers residents and the surrounding community. The Butterfly Garden design was developed during an intensive one-day charrette with the Washington Butterfly Society. |
