| Alban Tower / Washington, DC ULI Design Excellence Award ASLA Merit Design Award The elegant Alban Towers, a Gothic Revival apartment building designed in 1929, visually complements its high profile neighbors, the Washington National Cathedral and St. Alban's School. Subsequently converted to an upscale hotel and later a Georgetown University dormitory, an award winning historic preservation project has restored the apartment building to its original use. Lee and Associates (LA) provided comprehensive landscape architectural services as part of the restoration, from schematic design to construction documentation. A 22,000 square foot linear urban rooftop garden park was developed on top of an in-ground parking garage. To create a green buffer between the original seven story historic building and fifteen newly constructed luxury townhomes, LA designed a Butterfly Garden as an amenity to Alban Towers residents and the surrounding community. The Butterfly Garden design was developed during an intensive one-day charrette with the Washington Butterfly Society. |
