/ In collaboration with Parsons Engineering, Lee and Associates prepared a landscape plan for the reconstruction of Columbus Plaza at Union Station, a historic landmark in Washington, DC. This historic plaza, which stands in the middle of a large traffic circle, includes a memorial to Christopher Columbus and several large fountains. Preservation of the historic elements and character of the plaza were critical to all aspects of the project. The plan redesigned the traffic circle, easing congestion while enabling the expansion of the pedestrian plaza. Our work included studying and reworking pedestrian circulation patterns to maximize efficiency and safety, modifying existing and adding new traffic islands, and creating new planting areas. |
