/ Kingman Island is located on the Anacostia River, in Washington, DC. Green Spaces for DC in partnership with the DC Department of Parks and Recreation held a design competition to create a LEED Platinum Visitor Center that would serve as an environmental educational center and a model for sustainability. In 2005, the Anacostia Waterfront Corporation took control of the oversight of Kingman Island and the design for the visitor center. Lee and Associates teamed with Studios Architecture, were selected as the winning entry for the competition. The design concept seamlessly connects the visitor center with the surrounding landscape. Some of the site features include a series of elevated boardwalks, guiding visitors through native wetlands; a walk-up roof garden with exhibit space and a gray water collection water feature; outdoor classrooms; and nature trails that lead to a discovery playground and other parts of the island. This center also serves as a major destination along the Anacostia Riverwalk. |
