| Korean Ambassador's Residence / Washington, DC ASLA Design Award Winner The Korean Ambassador's Residence is a 3-acre property in northwest Washington, DC, featuring the work of Korean Architect Soon Gun Kim. Lee + Papa and Associates (LPA)originally developed a comprehensive landscape master plan including a series of waterfalls and many Korean specimens of plant materials including, among others, chestnuts, persimmons, and Korean boxwoods. Historic sculptural stone elements transported from Korea are placed throughout the gardens. A multi-purpose courtyard with a monolithic prehistoric stone fountain establishes a smooth transition between the garden and residence. Since the 1996 implementation of the original design, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers discovered contaminated soil and buried munitions on the grounds of the Residence, which was the site of a World War I ammunition testing facility. Remediation required extensive excavation that removed and destroyed many of the garden's features. In 2000, LPA prepared an extensive garden restoration plan to respond to the new site conditions and repair the remediation damage. The new design builds upon the original, incorporating and enhancing many of the same features. New features include an arbor, pavilion and rock outcroppings inspired by the Korean landscape. LPA provided on-site construction administration to ensure adherence to the ambitious construction schedule. |
