Sara Downing / Originally from Syracuse, New York, Sara is our most recent addition to Lee + Papa and Associates. Prior to joining the firm she completed a master's degree in landscape architecture from the University of Virginia, and she received dual undergraduate degrees in Environmental studies and French from Bucknell University. As a student at UVA, Ms. Downing worked on a diversity of projects sites, ranging from Parc Juan Miro in Barcelona, to the dilapidated surrounds of ancient Roman ruins in Ercolano, Italy, to Charlottesville's own City Yard. Her previous experiences with preservation on Nantucket and interning with Graham Landscape Architecture in Annapolis, Maryland have advanced her awareness of using design as a response to both human values and the fragile ecosystems in which they are situated. At the root of her interest in landscape architecture is the potential for design to uncover and highlight dialectical qualities inherent within everyday places. |
Inspirations: streets in Tours de France, remote islands in Fiji, public plazas in Barcelona, and fabulous parking lots- (there are too few of those) Reads: design manifestos, L.A. magazine, Harry Potter in French. Someday maybe I'll be able to say that I've read Michael Dirr's Manual of Woody Landscape Plants from cover to cover. Hobbies: Tennis, running, music, being in or near the water, traveling, scuba diving, eating delicious food, and time spent with family and friends. I still climb trees when the opportunity presents itself... |
