Mark Papa / AIA, NCARB, Principal Mark leads the firm's practice of urban design and planning, having over 35 years of experience. His projects include: waterfronts, urban entertainment, retail, mixed use projects, parks and recreation facilities, transit oriented redevelopment, downtown revitalization, and large-scale residential developments. As Director of Urban Design for Lee + Papa and Associates for the past six years, he has directed numerous significant projects in The Washington Metropolitan Area. Prominent projects include: The Millennium Gift: The Visioning Plan for The Anacostia waterfront and Transit Orient Development (TOD) Master Plans for WMATA (totaling 30 so far, which include all of the new stations proposed for the extension to Dulles Airport). His waterfront planning includes urban design plans for Jersey City, Hoboken, Norfolk, Oakland, and Portland Maine. Internationally, he recently completed a waterfront master plan for the Ancient Capital City of Nanjing, China, as well as a 150 acre sports related mixed use project within Dubailand; and 1,000 acre master plan for two educational campuses, both in the UAE. He is also the architect of record for the Pentagon 9/11 Memorial. His planning on the Anacostia River waterfront includes the South East Federal Center, Southwest Waterfront and the Stadium Armory Metro Station at RFK Stadium. He is presently working on the Poplar Point Master Plan with a multi-disciplinary team. Prior to joining Lee + Papa, Mr. Papa was Director of Urban Design for the Washington DC office of EEK Architects. In this capacity, he completed numerous urban design projects in NY, NJ, FL, NC, and Washington, DC. His work on the Hudson River waterfront resulted in the urban revitalization of Hoboken and the construction of the Goldman Sachs World Headquarters in Jersey City. He also completed urban entertainment centers in Myrtle Beach, SC, Newark, NJ and Coconut Grove, FL. As partner of MRAssociates, he created a master plan for a 600 square mile island Kojido off the coast of South Korea. The project included resorts, theme parks, new towns and a new port city. While with the American City Corporation of the Rouse Company, he was responsible for the conceptualization and implementation of urban design projects, urban retail projects and comprehensive plans in over thirty cities throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe. |
