Whitlock Elementary School

Whitlock Elementary (formerly Aiton Elementary) will receive a full modernization to align with DCPS’ educational specifications. The modernized Whitlock Elementary building will be roughly 73,000 square feet. The modernized building will address the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) and code requirements. Lee and Associates, Inc. (LAI) is part of the school modernization design team that will renovate the 73,000 sq ft existing building, and construct a new multi-story addition that improves facilities, provides ADA access and accommodates the growing student population.

The site’s unique and challenging topography is being used to create a sequence of outdoor play spaces and an outdoor classroom that reinforces the curved architectural design. LAI designed a new accessible entrance from 49th Place; three new playgrounds to accommodate various age groups; an outdoor classroom area with raised garden beds; a basketball sports court and native planting that promotes biodiversity and connections to the landscape beyond. Stormwater is captured and mitigated throughout the site through green roof planting and multiple bioretention facilities.
